Welcome

We are pleased to provide a one-day field school exploring how drawing can make us more perceptive ethnographic observers.

Led by Dr. Andrew Causey, anthropologist, artist, and author of Drawn to See: Drawing as An Ethnographic Method.

Join us for an exciting day exploring drawing-based techniques for enhancing ethnographic attention. This event is designed for anyone interested in ethnographic methods and/or ways of knowing. No drawing experience is necessary (truly!). Andrew Causey will lead participants on a visual foraging expedition in downtown Vancouver, teaching techniques for “drawing-enhanced seeing” that anyone can incorporate into their research and note-taking processes. The workshop also offers an opportunity to reflect on and discuss ethnography as a way of knowing, particularly how, in Causey’s words “participation – being active, alive, vital – is as essential as observation – using your reserve, focus, and concentration.”

Students (advanced undergraduate and graduate) are welcome, as are experienced ethnographers in anthropology and related fields.

This field school is in association with Simon Fraser University’s Sketching in Practice (SKiP) Symposium: http://sketchpractice.ca/blog.
